What is relative humidity?
Simply put, relative humidity is a measure of how much moisture is currently in the air compared to how much moisture the air could hold at that temperature. Heating your indoor air during cooler months sucks the moisture out of the air creating a very low relative humidity reading... often more dry than desert conditions!

Can a humidifier help decrease the number of airborne contaminants?
Yes, whole house humidifiers, like the White-Rodgers Comfort Plus models, contribute to a cleaner, safer home environment.

Airborne contaminants (bacteria, viruses, mold, mites, fungi, and others) thrive in environments of very high or very low humidity. Proper use of a whole house humidifier moderates your humidity, minimizing airborne contaminants.

What's the optimal setting for my humidistat?
Settings between 30 and 40 percent humidity optimize comfort and health.

Which White-Rodgers Comfort Plus humidifier is best for my home?
Many factors affect the kind of humidifier you should choose. Your heating and air conditioning contractor will help choose the right model for your home based on cubic footage, home insulation, water composition, etc.

Which type of humidifier is best for my needs?
Evaporative models, like the drum and flow-thru humidifiers, put as much moisture into the air as the air can handle. The ambient temperature will affect the amount of humidification.

Steam models can add moisture to the air regardless of ambient temperature. Your HVAC contractor can help you choose the best humidifier for you.

I just installed a humidifier in my house. Why don't I feel any difference?
There is an adjustment period of up to three weeks. Furniture, woodwork, carpeting, houseplants, and other indoor objects will absorb the newly produced moisture until a normal level is reached.

Can I install my humidifier in an area where ambient temperature can go below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (like an attic)?
No! Installing a humidifier in a location where below freezing temperatures can occur could cause freezing and water damage to your home.

How often should I service my humidifier?
This depends upon the model and your environment. Contact your heating and air conditioning contractor for advice specific to your needs.

Should my humidifier operate during the summer months?
Summer air is naturally more humid than winter air. In fact, dehumidification (removing humidity from the air) is typically preferable during summer months. Whole house air conditioners do dehumidify on their own, ask your heating and air conditioning contractor for more information.
